I am Shala, founder of Slow. I've been making herbal medicine and body care products for over a decade - learning several nuances along the way. When I got pregnant with my son in 2009, I knew that I would take a very unconventional route into motherhood and beyond. I chose to birth my (breech-presenting) son outside of the system with a handful of amazing midwives. I did not circumcise, I breastfed on demand, we co-slept, I wore my baby and practiced what is known as "attachment-parenting"... this isn't something I was taught or read in books, it simply felt like the most natural and connected way I could go about mothering. I knew, with every fiber in my being, that I was the one who knew what was best for me and my baby. With that understanding, I would need to equip myself with the knowledge we are all capable of tapping into if I wanted to stay away from the standard medical system and tend to my son's inevitable woes (tummy upsets, earaches, colds & flus, rashes, scrapes, etc.). So, with that seed, I dove into home herbalism through books and sisters and fellow community leaders. I learned to grow, harvest and infuse herbs for tending my son's colds, earaches, rashes and tummy upsets. I took preventative measures through our food and tried my very best to remain aligned with what I felt was best for me and my little family.

In 2013, I became a birth and postpartum doula, offering my mama/baby-centered potions to new mothers and expanding my knowledge on using herbs and nutrient-dense foods to optimize health and vitality through pre-conception, pregnancy and beyond. In 2019, I created Mama Life Wellness and started sharing my creations with my (at the time) Boise community. At the end of 2020, I launched my website and continue to feel deeply connected to making magic in my home-based apothecary and sharing with all of you!

Slowing down is not something that comes natural to me. I have had to work hard at taking the time to rest, to slow down, to embody a pace that mirrors the natural rhythms of the Earth. Tending a garden, making medicine and skincare, sourcing and forming relationships with farmers, connecting with the land and with plants (kitchen-witching) has shone so much light on the importance of reconnecting to our natural selves and slowing the heck down. That phrase "stop and smell the roses" has finally sunk in deep and my truest desire is to help you embody a sense of slowness through the simple act of tending to your skin & soul. I am committed to ethical sourcing, conscious wildcrafting, SLOW medicine and beauty and I love connecting! Feel free to reach out with any questions or if you’re in need of a cup of herbal tea and conversation. Sending love to all of you. Thank you for visiting Slow.
